You log into Vana'Diel. Your chosen job- thief. You look at your shiny new onion knife and the city around you.
Prepare for 15 levels of hell.
The thief is the weakest job in the entire game below level 15. You have no magic. You hit like a red mage. You attempt to delude yourself into thinking your A+ in evasion lets you tank, but when that Wild Dhalmel smashes you in the face for twice as much as he just did to the tank, you realise how utterly useless you are.

After level 15 and Sneak Attack the thief exists solely, to some extent, Treasure Hunter, but mostly to deal some moderate damage with your backstab. The sad thing is, even though you throw out 80+ damage every minute with your Sneak Attack and maybe 130+ with a weaponskill, the black mages can toss the same amount with every spell. It isn't so bad if you're an experienced puller, if you're a born leader of parties, if you use food, if you get dex + equipment, or if you memorize skillchains, but the real payoff comes when you hit level 30.
